Volunteering in the Community
I met early this month with one of the directors from Mission Norman to find out more about what they do and tell them about our church planting effort. Partnering with them seemed to be a good fit, so we went to check out their operations. They provide food, diapers, and other necessities to needy families; assistance with job placement, utilities, and other long term needs; and they organize Bible study groups in apartment complexes across the city. Steve, Kristian, and I now volunteer there on Thursdays, mostly doing intake counseling with people who come in for assistance. We don’t coerce professions for assistance, but everyone receives spiritual counseling when they come in. We’re glad to participate in what they’re doing; they don’t have enough staff to take care of everyone who comes through, and we don’t have the logistics to do anything like what they are.
And the best part, we get to share the Gospel! In a four hour period today, I got to sit down and share the Gospel with about 12 people, and I’m sure Steve would report a similar number. We handed out numerous tracts, and a couple of people indicated they would be interested in coming to one of NGBC’s small group Bible studies. Mission Norman’s director offered today to forward the contact information of several new converts so that Steve and I can follow up with them. Pray that the seed of the Gospel would take root in people’s hearts and that NGBC will be able to raise up disciples in Norman.
Steve is working on the next Music Fellowship, which will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 7 – 9 pm. The turnout was decent in March, but the OEC building was an unfamiliar location for a lot of people, which may have kept numbers down. This time he has secured the use of the Performing Arts Studio downtown. (For those familiar with Norman, it is the old train depot across from the Cleveland County Courthouse.) Pray that this ministry would be fruitful. Norman is a very artistic community, and there has been a lot of interest in the Music Fellowship. Pray that those who come would hear the Gospel and trust Christ as a result. And pray that we will receive additional contacts to follow up with.
Small Group Bible Studies
We’ve had a number of people express an interest in coming to small groups, and we’ve been talking for a couple months about starting another one. One of the things that can slow things down is that it is hard to get people in our culture to commit to things. We have some promising leads, but pray that God will raise up some committed people so that we can start and start right.
Do You Know People in Norman?
We’re looking to reach people who are not connected to a church. If you have kids, grand kids, siblings, co-workers, employees, friends, or enemies that we can contact to share more about Christ and our church, please let us know. We’ll do our best to get in touch with them.
Visiting Your Church
We would love to come talk to your church about the Great Commission in general and the work in Norman in particular. We’re available most Sundays (or even other days) to visit with your church.
